SOLAR INCENTIVES ARE ALWAYS REDUCING SO YOU NEED TO ACT SOONER THAN LATER! 

In the solar market, incentives are declining quickly because as demand rises, subsidies decrease.  These trends can be proven by observing the solar markets in California and New Jersey for the past decade.  These savings help make solar power affordable for most people, but they won’t last indefinitely.  With this trend in mind, K-Star believes it’s best for Long Islander’s to take the first step towards their clean energy independence today.

MYTH: Electric systems are going to get less expensive and more efficient any time now, so it’s better to wait.   

TRUTH: These systems aren’t getting less expensive; they are getting more expensive because as incentives are reduced, you to have to pay more out of pocket.  It takes about 5 years for new technology to reach the consumer, due to the lengthy process of designing production equipment for new solar technology.

So then: Ask yourself when trying to determine if you should wait: If you waited 5 years for the cost of a solar electric system to drop:

• How much would you already have paid to your utility company over the next 5 years?
  
  
• How much oil and gas will you have contributed to the problem of pollution and global warming?  (LIPA uses mostly oil and gas to fuel their power plants.)

THE INVESTMENT THAT PAYS OFF -

Similar to the relationship between a homeowner and paying rent, self-generating clean energy is no different.  When you rent you continue to pay the landlord (Utility Company) and you never see a return.  A mortgage pays off the investment over time.  The long term investments of Solar Electric and Solar Hot Water systems add value of your home, as stated by the Appraisal Institute of Chicago. 

A solar PV system is an investment that begins to pay itself off as soon as it’s turned on.  And when it is paid off, the energy you generate is FREE for the life of the system, which is more than 30 years!

THE INCENTIVES-

Long Island Power Authority Solar Pioneer Rebate

LIPA currently offers a cash rebate up to a maximum of $35,000 for the largest system that they allow on a residential property (10 Kilowatts). For every kilowatt of power capacity that you install, you will earn you a cash rebate of $3,500.00 directly from LIPA!
This rebate of $3.50/watt makes solar power accessible and economical for Long Islanders.  In fact, these incentives when coupled with your tax credits, total almost 65% the cost of the average system here on LI. to potentially eliminate your electric bills!

Net Metering

New York’s Solar Choice Act offers residential customers “net metering” for any excess power that you have produced but did not use.  Which means that when you produce more power than you need while the system is generating power your meter spins backwards, sending your clean and green solar electricity back to LIPA.  You’ll then earn kilowatt hour credits for all of this unused power that you traded to LIPA.  You can then use it for your future use or elect to have LIPA send you a check for your unused power.  Through net metering, you become the electric company and LIPA becomes the customer; paying you for electricity!

At times when your system isn’t generating electricity like at night or on a densely clouded day (partly cloudy and light overcast will still generate power) you will use LIPA’s energy, but you’ll have to eliminate all of your credits before you start having to pay for LIPA’s power. Many of our customers generate so much power and credits throughout the year with our highly efficient PV systems that they never pay for LIPA’s electricity ever again!

Tax Credits

Tax credits work better for you than a standard “deduction” because it is taken off the taxes you owe the government.  The amount is not deducted from your taxable income, it is full cash value. 

New York State Tax Credit

The New York State tax credit law allows you to deduct up to 25% of the solar power system's cost — up to a $5,000 maximum, to be subtracted off of the tax that you owe!  It is credited to you when you file your taxes.  This is NY’s way of helping you offset the cost.

Federal Tax Credit

Their tax credit is 30% of the net cost for a solar power system, maximized at $2,000 for residential systems.  This incentive will expire at the end of 2008. 
NO CAP for commercial installations through 2008 only.   Commercial customers receive $3.50 per watt from LIPA to a maximum of $35,000 PER ELECTRIC ACCOUNT.  SO REMEMBER - MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS = MULTIPLE LIPA REBATES.  You will also get the added tax incentive of accelerated 5 year depreciation from the federal government. So in 5 years time, our commercial installations are completely "written off".

If  your business is profitable and you are paying taxes, then solar is an excellent tax shelter to utilize!

HOUSES OF WORSHIP AND NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS 

Currently, LIPA offers a rebate of $4.50/per watt for Tax-Exempt property owners, which translates into a $45,000 rebate for a 10k system!  The non-profit rebate is higher, but it is also vulnerable to LIPA rebate reductions, as with the residential market.  So the time is now to start saving money while protecting the quality of the earth for generations to come!
